On weekends in the summer, the sky above Niagara Falls is filled with fireworks.  This creates two separate but equally amazing effects. One is the sound.  After a firework bursts, there’s a good five second delay until you hear the boom.  Then after about eight seconds, when the sound has moved past you, gone through the waterfall, and bounced off the cliffs behind the water, the sound that returns to you in a distorted echo is hauntingly beautiful. Two is the birds.  At the first boom, thousands of birds were awoken from their nests in the cliffs and took flight, circling in undulating masses through the huge spotlights shining on the falls, not settling down until the fireworks ceased.
